Sign bungle muddles way to Sunward Park Hospital

An apparently botched job by Sanral, at the Rondebult Road off-ramp on the N17 East, has left dozens of motorists travelling to Sunward Park Hospital puzzled, and others reportedly lost.

This is the result of road work contractors allegedly installing a, incorrect road sign at the off-ramp, confusing drivers.

The road traverses north and south and the sign at the major off-ramp in Farrar Park points left instead of right, telling drivers to turn left into Rondebult Road if they want to go to Sunward Park Hospital.

So, a driver trying to get to the hospital by following the sign would turn the wrong way and head toward Boksburg town, instead.

Concerned drivers blamed Sanral contractors for not knowing their left from their right when they erected the sign on that busy road.

They voiced their concerns, saying the off-ramp is used by hundreds of drivers on a daily basis, and that the error has been there for a very long time.

Robert Aytoun, who is a paramedic and uses the off-ramp regularly, said the confusing road sign has been directing drivers the wrong way for a very long time.

He has on numerous occasions tried to get Sanral to correct the problem, but to no avail.

He claimed he has also taken to social networking sites, to poke fun at the sign, but that did also not bring about any change.

“It’s a good thing I know where the hospital is, otherwise I would have been also really lost and confused,” said Aytoun, who feared the sign might confuse visitors and those transporting injured or ill people to the hospital.

“The same road sign on the other side of the freeway (Rondebult Road off-ramp N17 west) is, however, facing the right way, correctly telling drivers to turn left to head down to Sunward Park Hospital,’ said Aytoun.

Sanral has not yet replied to the Advertiser’s request for comment on the issue. -@FanieFLK
