15 people seriously injured in minibus taxi crash

A total of 15 people sustained serious injuries after a minibus taxi crashed against a concrete wall barrier on the N3 North, just after Gillooly`s interchange at around 8.30am today.

The taxi landed on its side.

Ekurhuleni Disaster and Emergency Management Services (DEMS) responded swiftly to the accident and rescued the injured from the wreckage.

“Oil and petrol leakage were identified at the scene and necessary precaution was initiated to prevent any possible fire outbreak,” said DEMS spokesperson William Ntladi.

Ntladi said a total of 14 passengers were transported to various hospitals within Ekurhuleni by ambulances and the driver of the taxi was airlifted to Charlotte Maxeke hospital in Johannesburg in a critical condition.

Traffic was heavily affected as the Emergency chopper had to land in the middle of the freeway to take the critically injured driver to hospital for further medical treatment.

Traffic Authorities were on scene and investigations were initiated towards the actual cause of the accident.
