Taxi owner gunned down at rank

A taxi owner died after he was shot at the newly constructed Ramaphosa Taxi Rank, on Wednesday evening, August 5.

According to the police, the 42-year-old Lance Martin of Reiger Park was shot in his taxi that was parked at the rank.

Sgt Mashudu Phathela confirmed the shooting, stating that an unknown assailant emerged from nowhere and fired shots at the driver along with another occupant in the taxi.

He then fled the scene.

Martin suffered gun shot wounds to his face and upper body (back). The second victim was hit in the foot.

Martin succumbed to his injuries on arrival at the hospital.

The motive for the attack is still unclear, but it is believed that Martin has been shot out of revenge over the recent Windmill Park shooting, whereby another taxi owner going by the name of Herbert Oliphant was gunned down.

Oliphant was shot to death last month in Windmill Park.

Police have no firm leads and are appealing to witnesses to come forward with information by phoning the investigating officer, W/O Simon Madonsela on 011 916 7000. -@FanieFLK
