Resurgence in attacks on bank customers

The Boksburg police warn bank customers to be wary of their surroundings when going to and from the bank to deposit or to withdraw money.

This follows recent attacks on bank clients.

In a recent attack, a Freeway Park man parted with his hard earned R15 000, when crooks robbed him on Tuesday, August 4.

The victim told the police that he went to a nearby bank to cash a cheque, and thugs pounced on him when he was about to enter his yard.

“He was approaching his home from the bank when all of a sudden a Blue Volvo pulled over next to his car, and two armed men ran towards him, shouting ‘give us the bag of money’,” said spokesperson for the Boksburg SAPS Lieut Kwendzakwakhe Ngobese.

In attempt to save his money during the hold-up, the victim reportedly threw the bag full of money inside the yard.

However, one of the robbers jumped over the fence to grab the money, before they fled in their Volvo.

Ngobese urged people to be more vigilant and to refrain from carrying large sums of money in order to lessen their exposure to the risk of these attacks.

He also advised bank customers to consider alternative methods of banking, such as the internet or ATM transfers.

“It appears as if they knew that he had withdrawn a large sum of money,” he said.

”We believe that a ‘spotter’ linked to the robbers had identified the man while he was still inside the bank, and passed on the information to other members of their syndicate, who then followed him from the bank.”

No arrests had been made at the time of going to press, but the incident is being investigated.

* In another story, police found a profusely bleeding man lying on the ground on Tuesday night, August 4.

Police found three cartridges on the scene and the motive for the shooting is unknown.

* Meanwhile, on August 2, a 14-year-old girl told the police that she had been raped by an adult male in the Angelo informal settlement.
