Ipid will also investigate officer who knocked over little girl

Police watchdog, the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (Ipid) will lay charges of culpable homicide and reckless driving against an EMPD officer who knocked a 3-year-old child to death during June.

With the SAPS and EMPD also looking into the matter, this brings to three the total number of law enforcement agencies investigating the death of the little girl.

Ipid acting media liaison officer Grace Langa said the officer was apparently speeding to a protest march, when swerved to avoid potholes and knocked over the young Vosloorus girl.

“He also knocked down other man who was standing not far from the girl,” said Langa.

The man sustained injuries.

“Our investigating officer took a statement from the victim today (July 16) and we will consolidate all information before taking the matter to Director of Public Prosecution,” said Langa.

The EMPD is also conducting an investigation.

EMPD spokesperson Kgasago said the matter is being probed by their integrity and standards committee.

“The officer’s driving permit has been suspended until the matter is finalised,” said Kgasago.

He said the officer has neither been arrested nor suspended from work.

Kgasago said in such instances the procedure dictates that they suspend the officers from driving until they appear before a disciplinary hearing.

There is also an external probe by the SAPS, which will inform the EMPD’s internal investigations of its findings.

“We will gather information from the docket as soon as the SAPS have gathered sufficient details and are ready to take the matter to the DPP to determine the strength of the case,” said Kgasago.

The EMPD will also take a statement from the officer involved before deciding on the matter.
