Shape up and keep fit with Ekurhuleni’s outdoor gyms

In continuing efforts to encourage citizens to keep fit and live healthier lifestyles, the Ekurhuleni Metro is installing outdoor gym equipment in parks across the metropolis.

This is according to the metro spokesperson, Themba Gadebe.

“Assembled together in the middle of a park, the equipment could easily be mistaken for playground equipment as it is colorful and attractive.

“The immovable machines are designed to withstand the outdoor weather conditions and minor wear and tear,” said Gadebe.

“Since 2012, the city has installed the ‘eco-gyms’ in recreational parks such as the Dayanglen Park in Boksburg, Germiston Lake Park, Winnie Mandela Park in Tembisa, Sindane Park in Tsakane, Zonkizizwe Park in Katlehong and Mamkele Street Park in Wattville, said Gadebe.

“During his State of the City Address in March this year, Mayor Clr Mondli Gungubele – who finished his sixth Comrades Marathon in just over 11 hours on Sunday – extended a call to citizens of Ekurhuleni to lead healthy lifestyles.

“In advancing our call for healthy living, I am excited that the city will soon unleash 60 eco-gyms throughout the region. As of July, some of our existing parks will be refurbished and fitted with gym equipment.”
