Legendary Dave Barr to give a talk in Boksburg

Dave Barr will be at Gold Rand Harley-Davidson on Friday, May 1, where he will talk about his trips around the world and Riding the Ice.

Dave, who has two prosthetic legs, is famous for travelling 83000 miles, on a 1972 Harley-Davidson motorcycle, in a journey which took three and a half years to complete and spanned six continents.

At the moment, he is busy with his trip around South Africa on a Harley-Davidson 1200 Sportster, visiting Cheshire Home in Cape Town, PE, Durban and Johannesburg, and meeting more wonderful people of South Africa.

Dave, who is an American, joined the SADF and lost his legs when his Jeep hit a landslide in Angola, while he was a machine gunner for the legendary Colonel Jan Breytenbach.

Dave recovered and, after returning to combat duties on prosthetics, finally left the army and embarked on a lifelong quest to help other disabled people come to terms with their disabilities.

Dave chose Cheshire Homes as his favoured charity, which was started by another soldier, Leonard Cheshire, who was awarded the Victoria Cross in WW2.

Dave then took on the almost unbelievable challenge of circumnavigating the world, alone, on his Harley-Davidson motorcycle.

No-one, never mind a disabled person, had ever done this before.

This year, he returns to where it all started and he asks for support in his ride around the country, so he can help disabled bikers and ex-servicemen in South Africa.

The talk will be held from 11am at 38 North Rand Road.
