Easter weekend: Three killed in accidents, 57 arrested for drunk driving

Three people - one driver and two passengers - were killed in two accidents in Ekurhuleni between Thursday, April 2, evening and Monday April 6.

A further 57 drivers were locked up for driving while under the influence of alcohol.

EMPD spokesman Alfred Kgasago said further arrests were made were five for possession of narcotics, one for murder, two for theft and one for a fake driving licence.

“Twenty-five vehicles were issued with discontinue notices with three impounded on suspicion of being stolen vehicles while eight stolen vehicles were recovered,” said Kgasago.

He said that on Sunday, April 5 at 2am, in Duduza, a single vehicle accident claimed a life of a 17 year-old male passenger wherein the driver sustained serious injuries.

Still on the same day at 7pm on Great North Road in Benoni, two vehicles were involved in a crash where a male driver and a female passenger were killed.

“As regards drinking and driving, an operation conducted in Edenvale, Kempton Park, Benoni, and Springs areas between Thursday April 2 and Friday April 3, saw a total of 33 drivers being arrested.

“Fifteen were arrested in Edenvale, 11 in Kempton Park, six in Benoni and one in Springs,” said Kgasago.

Furthermore, between Friday April 3 midday and Saturday April 4 night, five arrests were made for drinking and driving in KwaTsaDuza area, one in Vosloorus and 13 in Germiston North.

The five arrests for narcotics were made in Germiston and Boksburg.

“Three arrests were made in Reiger Park – one for murder and two for theft.

“One male suspect was taken in for being in possession of a fake driving licence while street traders were arrested for possession of counterfeit DVDs and CDs valued at almost R100 000 in Daveyton and Katlehong.”
