Aesthetics focuses on holistic approach to general medicine

Dr Susan Burger and her business partner, Cindy Brits, know all there is to know about the aesthetics and anti-ageing properties of Botox and fillers.

They shared their knowledge on March 11, when they were the guest speakers at the monthly East Rand Business Woman function.

Burger is a fully qualified general practitioner, specialising in aesthetic and anti-ageing medicine, and Brits is an award-winning entrepreneur in Kempton Park.

“From a business perspective, the field of aesthetics is growing exponentially; in fact, it can be argued that the pursuit of beauty has been with us since the beginning of time,” said Burger.

“This epical dilemma has inspired scholars to determine why it is that people aspire to improve their appearances, besides being a bit vain.

“It was found that if your colleagues deem you attractive, you earn up to 40 per cent more. If you deem yourself attractive, whether you are or not, you earn up to 70 per cent more.

“The pursuit of beauty and perfection has, in the modern time, resulted in the development of a specialty medical field dedicated only to this pursuit of physical beauty – aesthetic medicine.

“Aesthetics not only focuses on the physical improvement of one’s face and body, but also the holistic approach to general medicine.

According to Burger, the aim of aesthetic medicine is to make the results look beautifully natural.

She said that anti-ageing Botox and fillers give more volume to the cheeks, lift the brows and smooth the forehead frown lines.

“The idea behind facial rejuvenation is to lift the eyebrows and open the eyes, and to give volume to the upper-third of the face,” she explained.

“As soon as we do that, you take five to 10 years off your actual age. Plastic surgeons are being quite threatened.”

Botox, which is a temporary muscle relaxant, lasts about four months before your body metabolises it, and filler lasts eight to 12 months.

“We use Botox mainly for wrinkles or facial expression; it takes about two weeks to fully develop and to soften the wrinkles of expression.

“You can compare filler to Polyfilla; when filler is applied we see immediate before and after results.”

According to Burger, a lot of bad media publication and PR from Botox and fillers have resulted from people misusing them and using incorrect products and using it for the incorrect reasons.

As part of a live demonstration, Burger applied anti-ageing filler to Loraine Meyer’s lips.
