DA challenges mayor to check out ‘trashotropolis’

The DA in Ekurhuleni has relished the challenge from the mayor, Clr Mondli Gungubele, to show him where the metro is filthy.

“During a rowdy debate at the council meeting, in November, the mayor refused to accept that businesses felt his aerotropolis would be more accurately described as a trashotropolis,” says Clr Jackie Reilly.

“He said the DA’s Clr Tracey Butler, who relayed this to him in council, was ignorant.”

Gungubele allegedly accused the DA of misrepresenting the true state of the metro. He challenged the party to show him areas that were filthy, depressing, unsightly and unhealthy.

“The mayor is clearly in denial, as he would merely have to step outside his plush and pristine office in Germiston to see the state of the metro,” says Reilly.

“Everywhere one looks, rubbish flows in the streets, people live amongst heaps of trash, storm water drains overflow, sewage leaks down roads.”

According to Reilly, denying that this metro is in a state of disrepair and neglect is an insult to the millions of people living here.

At every council meeting in future, the DA will showcase an area that is in desperate need of attention.

“In a city as large as ours, there is no shortage of examples of the dump in which we live and the many areas where trash is seldom removed, if ever,” says Reilly. – @IschkeBoksburg
