Half-marathon to take a stand against HIV and Aids

The City of Ekurhuleni, in association with the Soul City Sports Club, will again host the World Aids Day 21.1km half-marathon, 10km and 5km road races at the Katlehong Sports Complex, on Sunday, December 7.

“The race is aimed at encouraging participants and communities at large to unite in the fight against HIV and Aids by showing support for people living with the virus and those who are affected,” said Ekurhuleni spokesperson Themba Radebe.

“The race will also commemorate the lives lost due to HIV-related sicknesses.”

Ekurhuleni is one of the cities with the highest rate of the virus in the country and, according to the local municipality, another objective of the race is to create awareness of the dangers of unprotected sex and having multiple partners.

Various NGOs in the field of the virus will participate on the day. They will be present at the race venue to distribute educational information and provide counselling and testing services.

Entry forms are available at all Central Gauteng races and the city’s sport and recreation offices, at the Germiston Stadium.

Athletes may also enter online on www.entrytime.com.

For more information, contact Mathapelo Morema on 083 986 6376.

Registration will open at 5.30am on race day. Entries for all three distances can also be submitted on the day.

Starting times are 7am for the 21.1km and 10km distances and 7.10am for the 5km fun run. – @SabeloBoksburg
