Sports against substance abuse: Delmore and Reiger Park share spoils

Delmore FC and Reiger Park played out to an entertaining two-all draw at the recently-held Sport against Substance Abuse Soccer Tournament at the Boksburg City Stadium.

The meet, which was eligible for 13- to 21-year-old participants, saw six teams do battle from: Angelo, Jerusalem, Joe Slovo, Ramaphosa, Delmore and Reiger Park.

Asked about the tournament’s objectives, Department of Social Development’s Julia Nkgoeng, said: “It’s sports against substance abuse; we are trying to keep children away from drug usage through sport.

“Every participant received a certificate of appreciation; the programme was started last year and we are planning to take the youth to rehab centres next year to further raise awareness of the effects of drug abuse.”

Joining the Department of Social Development in the organising of the one-day tournament, was the Local Drug Action Committee.

Among the festivities was a rugby match between Igugulethu Child and Youth Care Centre and Mary Moodley Child and Youth Care Centre, with the latter emerging as comfortable victors following a 45-15 drubbing.

Additional entertainment on the day was provided by Sinethemba Choir. – @SabeloBoksburg
