Soccer fans pay tribute to sports personalities

Soccer fans arrived in their Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs outfit this morning as the metro paid tribute to the late Orlando Pirates and Bafana Bafana captain, Senzo Meyiwa, boxer Phindile Mwelase and the former 800m world champion, Mbulaeni Mulaudzi.

“Even at the height of Apartheid, sport brought South Africans together. We have hosted a number of international sporting events, including the 1995 Rugby World Cup, 1996 Afcon and 2010 Fifa World Cup, where South Africans from all walks of life came together in harmony and support of their country. That is the power of sport,” said Ekurhuleni mayor, Clr Mondli Gungubele.

SAFA member, Anthony Reeves said that soccer brings the nation together and people must take charge of the country.

“We live with criminals in South Africa and we have lost a hero. We need to get rid of the crime in this nation, as well as the drugs. We need young people like Miyewa because they are the ambassadors of this nation. We must continue with Senzo’s legacy.”

Chairperson of the Greater Vosloorus Orlando Pirates branch, Nkunzayihlehli Tshabalala said, “Senzo spent more than seven to 10 years sitting on the bench waiting for his opportunity, and when it came, he grabbed it with both hands. He represented Orlando Pirates, and he was a show stopper.

“As soon as Shakes Mashaba became the Bafana Bafana coach, he identified Senzo as someone with potential. His untimely death left us breathless. We are still shocked because we lost the best. He was an achiever at the age of 27. This is an international loss.”

Kaizer Chiefs Germiston branch secretary Olwethu Mjoli added: “Senzo, our captain, may his soul rest in peace, we have greatly lost. I hope his killers rot in jail, we want a crime-free nation, we don’t need people like them in the country.”
