Meyiwa to be laid to rest on Saturday, derby postponed

Orlando Pirates and Bafana Bafana goalkeeper and captain Senzo Meyiwa (27) will be buried in his town of birth Umlazi, Durban on Saturday, November 1.

Meyiwa was shot dead in Vosloorus where he was visiting girlfriend Kelly Khumalo on Sunday evening, October 26, a day after captaining Pirates to the semi-finals of the Telkom Knockout following their 4-1 battering of Ajax Cape Town at Orlando Stadium.

According to reports, Orlando Pirates chairman Irvin Khoza was joined by KZN Premier Senzo Mchunu, his Deputy Willies Mchunu and Cabinet including Secretary General of the ANC in KZN, Sihle Zikalala, who all paid visit to the Meyiwa family in Umlazi on Monday, October 27.

The Meyiwa family are also reported to have travelled to Johannesburg the following day to identify Senzo’s body to prepare for his repartriation.

It has also been reported that even though the service is open to anyone who wants to pay their last respects to Senzo, Kelly Khumalo, however, according to Meyiwa’s father Samuel, is not welcome.

* Meanwhile, the Premier Soccer League (PSL) has confirmed that the Soweto Derby between Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs scheduled for this weekend is postponed.

The two Soweto giants were due to meet for their first of two of their league games between them but the abrupt death of Meyiwa has put all proceedings on hold.

The PSL is set to release further details of a new date at a later stage. – @SabeloBoksburg
