CBC begin 2014/ 2015 campaign with vital win

CBC Old Boys Premier XI cricket-side got off to a winning start in their new Eastern Premier League campaign by five wickets against close rivals Benoni Northerns at the CBC grounds on Saturday, October 4.

The encounter, which was a replay of the opening game of the last two seasons, has somewhat confined Northerns as CBC’s whipping boys, with the visitors also losing both home and away games against the local side last season.

Northerns skipper Kurt Francis lost the pre-match toss and the visitors were invited to bat first before posting an impressive 233/ 8 in their 50 overs.

Ernest Kemm emerged as the away side’s top-scorer (41), with Stef de Bartholomio’s undefeated 36, Francis’ knock of 33 and GC Pretorius’ 30 all helping pile to the total.

CBC stalwart Wesley Coulentianos was not prepared to surrender home-ground advantage.

With the top-order batsman eating into Northerns’ total with Wesley’s 113 not out, the homeside completed their chase inside 46 overs, with the loss of five wickets.

“We knew that CBC needed one of their frontline batters to score big, and that’s exactly what Coulentianos did.

“He batted brilliantly and they were the better side. They deserved to win,” said Francis. – @SabeloBoksburg
