Howzat: Eastern cricket season returns

Defending champion Kempton Park, will get the 2014/15 Cricket Premier League campaign underway when they host United on Sunday, October 5.

The match is one of four that will be played on opening day in the elite league with KT Windies (Kwa-Thema) welcoming Tembisa and Actonville hosting Duduza in the other fixtures.

The last fixture sees a heavyweight clash as CBC Old Boys and Benoni Northerns lock horns at CBC.

Old Boys, last season’s third place finishers, will be looking to go two places higher beginning with a strong start against 2012 champions and last season’s runners-up Northerns.

The league, however, will be without the Boksburg Cricket Club (BCC) Premier side, which drops to the Promotion League following the club’s original Promotion League side’s withdrawal from its league.

“Last season’s Promotion League side pulled out the league, which left the Premier League side with no seeding system and subsequently having to drop to the Promotion League,” said Len Meyer, who captained BCC’s Premier side last season.

“We attempted to apply to Easterns for special participation in the Premier League anyway, but failed.”

On the new season in the Promotion League, Meyer, who will still skipper the side, said: “Looking forward to the new season, it’s good to be back, and it’s going to be good.”

Players interested in joining BFC may contact Meyer on 082 921 6275.

* New Promotion League

The league has this season been divided into a Premier League Reserves League and a third-tier Promotion League in order to give the so-called smaller clubs in the league opportunity to progress.

Furthermore, a new Colts League (14 to 17 years old) is formed to bridge the gap between junior and senior cricket.
