Sentences handed down – court news in brief

The following cases were heard in the Boksburg Magistrates Court:

* James Coetzee (27), from Pomona, appeared in court on charges of aggravated robbery and attempted murder.

He pleaded guilty and was found guilty on July 21, and sentenced on August 27 to 12 years imprisonment.

On July 5, the accused stabbed and robbed Johannes Viljoen of a television, laptop, DVD player and two cellphones. He also attempted to kill Paulina Romila by stabbing her with a knife.

Magistrate Ramufhufhi presided over the matter, and Jabu Motha appeared on behalf of the State.

* Nkosonathi Khanyile (32) and Lucky Baholo (41), from Vosloorus, appeared in court on a charge of attempted house break-in.

They pleaded guilty, were found guilty and sentenced on August 28, to three years imprisonment for Khanyile and six years of which two years are suspended for five years for Baholo.

On October 9, 2012, the men attempted to break into Morkels Furniture.

Khanyile had a previous conviction of theft from 2012.

Baholo had previous convictions of receiving stolen property from 1980, theft in 1991, three charges of theft from 1994, malicious damage to property from 1999, theft in 2000, possession of house breaking implements from 2007, theft from 2010 and assault in 2012.

Magistrate Ramufhufhi presided over the matter, and Jabu Motha appeared on behalf of the State.

* Themba Mntambo (56), from Soweto, appeared in court on a charge of fraud.

He pleaded guilty, was found guilty and sentenced on September 2, to three years imprisonment.

On April 29, the accused went to Absa Bank and falsely identified himself as a legitimate account holder and attempted to withdraw R15 000.

He had previous convictions of theft in 1982, culpable homicide in 1988, theft in 1991, robbery in 1993, fraud in 2005, two charges of fraud in 2007, fraud in 2008 and fraud in 2010.

Magistrate Jurg Viviers presided over the matter, and Themba Maluleke appeared on behalf of the State.

* Legavan McQueen (23) and Roseland Ford (25), from Reiger Park, appeared in court on charges of assault with the intention to cause grievous bodily harm and malicious damage to property.

They pleaded not-guilty on July 11, were found guilty, and sentenced on August 26.

They were sentenced to nine months imprisonment, suspended for five years, for assault and R1 500 or three months imprisonment, suspended for five years, for malicious damage to property.

On March 21, the women assaulted Olivia Lasteless by punching and biting her, during the assault they broke a window, cups and glasses, to the value of R450.

Magistrate Ryan van Harte presided over the matter, and Busi Mafokeng appeared on behalf of the State.

* Lesego Mphela (24), from Soweto, appeared in court on a charge of theft.

He pleaded not guilty on July 16, was found guilty and sentenced on August 27 to R2 000 or four months imprisonment.

On April 15, the accused stole a jacket from RTT Intelligent Logistics, to the value of R699.

He had a previous conviction of theft from 2011.

Magistrate Ryan van Harte presided over the matter, and Busi Mafokeng appeared on behalf of the State.

* Melissa Bezuidenhout (20), from Palm Lodge, appeared in court on a charge of theft.

She pleaded guilty, was found guilty and sentenced on August 26 to six months imprisonment, suspended for five years.

On April 23, the accused stole an electric kettle from Shoprite, to the value of R129.99.

She had previous convictions of possession of drugs in 2011 and theft in 2011.

Magistrate Emmanuelle Magampa presided over the matter, and Angeline Mooiman appeared on behalf of the State.

* Liberty Nyoni (30), from Tembisa, appeared in court on a charge of possession of counterfeit goods.

She pleaded guilty, was found guilty and sentenced on August 28 to R2 000 or four months imprisonment.

On July 25, the accused was found in possession of 61 counterfeit DVDs, to the value of R9 150.

She had a previous conviction of possession of suspected stolen property from 2011.

Magistrate Emmanuelle Magampa presided over the matter, and Angeline Mooiman appeared on behalf of the State.

* Jonathan Kleinhans (23), from Reiger Park, appeared in court on a charge of contravening the Domestic Violence Act.

He pleaded guilty, was found guilty and sentenced on August 29 to R1 000 or three months imprisonment.

On May 1, the accused contravened a protection order when he swore at the complainant and threatened to kill her, as well as throwing a remote control at her and telling her children that their father is a murderer.
