Gauteng feels aftershocks from earthquake around Klerksdorp

An earthquake believed to measure 5.3 on the Richter scale shook South Africa on Tuesday morning, August 5.

The quake is said to be strongest in recent years.

According to the US Geological Survey the tremor was centred in Orkney, 120 km (70 miles) southwest of Johannesburg, near Klerksdorp.

The area is said to have a high concentration of gold mines.

The aftershocks was felt far and wide, especially on the East Rand, including Boksburg, Pretoria and Johannesburg.

People have taken to social media networks to talk about their experiences following the tremor which is believed to have been felt across the country.
