Boksburg North Hotel sold

One of Boksburg’s most historical sites has been sold and will be renovated by the new owners.

After owning the Boksburg North Hotel for 35 years, Harvey Berlin has sold this landmark and decided it is now time to move on.

The hotel was built in 1910, and a decade later renovations were done to add more rooms.

It was first used as a stop-over for stage coaches travelling from the West Rand, with the back of the hotel utilised to park the carriages and stable the horses.

On July 17, 1914, the barman, Alex Charlson, was shot and killed outside the hotel by the infamous Foster gang.

Berlin says his fondest memories of the hotel are his customers from all walks of life.

“In my opinion the hotel will always be most well-known for being the local watering hole for the mine workers, many years ago,” says Berlin.

Beer mugs used by the miners still hang in the hotel’s bar.

He says that he will now be taking it easy for a while as this is the first time in many years that he will be able to relax.

“I will be leaving the hotel at the end of July and the new owners will, according to my understanding, be renovating it completely.”

He says that the pub, which has its original fittings, will also be redone.

“As far as I know the building will remain a hotel,” says Berlin. – @CarmenBoksburg
