100 in 100: it just had to be Neymar
We’ve seen a handful of interesting narratives unfold at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil thus far: from Spain’s early shock elimination to France’s impressive resurgence; from Luis Suarez’s magical return from injury, to Costa Rica’s emergence; but, most importantly, we’ve seen goals, galore!
In fact, we’ve seen 50 scored in less than a week.
We’ve seen magical ones, including Robin van Persie’s untrue headed goal against Spain, to Tim Cahill’s historic strike against The Netherlands.
There have also been the more significant goals, and perhaps there’s none more significant at this stage than Neymar’s finish in the Selecao’s Group A encounter with Cameroon, which was the tournament’s 100th in Brazil’s 100th game in World Cup history.
The milestone goal comes just five days after Arjen Robben registered the tournament’s 50th, netting in a 3-2 win over Australia on June 18.
At just 22 years of age and a man who carries a nation’s hopes of guiding his country to an unprecedented sixth title on home soil, perhaps it’s fitting that it was Neymar who registered the big 100 of the tournament. – @SabeloBoksburg
