Metro’s route to modern public transport moves into high gear

The metro's continued efforts to live up to the standards of being a smart and developmental city have moved into high gear, en-route to providing the citizens of Ekurhuleni with a flexible, safe and cost effective public transport system.

This is according to Member of the Mayoral Committee for Roads and Transport Clr Thumbu Mahlangu.

“As Africa’s first aerotropolis, the upgrading of infrastructure and the transformation of the public transport system to match world class standards is essential,” says Mahlangu.

He says the Intergrated Rapid Public Transport Network (IRPTN) will see the development of high quality public transport system such as trains, buses and mini – bus taxis providing seamless travel experience to the Ekurhuleni commuters.

“The new chapter, in pursuit of the IRPTN, has opened up with the imminent launch of the first Ekurhuleni Bus Rapid Transit System (BRT) route, running from Tembisa, through Kempton Park to Vosloorus,” he adds.

“Construction work is already underway and major temporal inconveniences will be experienced by motorists and pedestrians travelling in these areas.

“Also, the construction of non-motorised transport infrastructure, such as pedestrian walkways and a network of cycle paths, are ongoing.”

He says the implementation of the IRPTN is the culmination of extensive consultations, engagements and surveys facilitated by the City of Ekurhuleni, with the members of the public, as well as key stakeholders in the transport industry, which were carried out in various communities around Ekurhuleni..

“Consultations continue especially within the public transport industry.”
