Be a blood donor this month

The South African National Blood Service (SANBS) in Boksburg calls on all eligible blood donors to donate blood, to ensure that there is enough blood for all patients.

According to SANBS, every day 3 000 units of blood are transfused to patients in dire need of blood. Blood transfusion in the country is made possible by the blood donors who regularly give their time and blood.

“We aim to maintain a stock level of five days, with 3 000 units collected per day to meet the demand.

“However, due to our planned blood drives being cancelled at the last minute, and the unusually high requests from hospitals, maintaining our five-day stock level is highly impossible,” explains SANBS Boksburg’s PRO, Mpho Letlatsa.

If you are in good health and between the ages of 16 and 65, weigh more than 50kg, and you lead a sexually safe lifestyle, you are urged to make your way to the East Rand Square blood donor centre, on Friday, June 6, from 1pm to 3pm.

For more information you can contact Letlatsa on 011 897 4906 or 079 888 3059 or e-mail mpho.letlatsa@sanbs.org.za or visit www.sanbs.org.za.

n June is National Blood Donor Month in South Africa. This is a time when SANBS pays tribute to its thousands of blood donors, who sacrifice their time in an effort, to save lives of people in dire need of blood or blood products.

The main event during Blood Donor Month is World Blood Donor Day, which is celebrated on June 14, annually. –
