ANC leads nationally, Gauteng results still outstanding

"We remain on track to complete the count, capture and audit of results for these elections in good time," says chief Electoral officer, Mosotho Moepya.

“And we remain on track to record the highest total number of votes cast for an election in South Africa’s 20-year history of democracy.”

As at 6pm yesterday, May 8, just over 12.62-million votes had been captured on the results system. This is out of 25.39-mil registered voters. By 9.10am on May 9, around 95 per cent of all votes have been counted.

By this morning at round 9.10am, the ANC was still leading by 62.44 per cent and the DA was still in pole position to be the opposition party on 22 per cent.

Gauteng remains the hot topic, with the ANC leading with just 53 per cent of the vote and the DA at around 31 per cent.

By around 9.40am the ANC was leading Ekurhuleni by 54 per cent.

Turnout in the voting districts captured so far remains steady at 72.85 per cent.

“At this rate it would seem as if we are on course to see over 18-m votes cast in this national election,” says Moepya.

This will exceed the 17.9-mil votes cast in 2009 and the 15.6-mil votes in 2004.

In terms of the provincial election count, the result in the Northern Cape is complete and a number of other provinces are nearing completion. This is with the exception of Gauteng.

As at 6pm last night, the following were the percentages of voting districts for which results are in:

  • Eastern Cape: 87 per cent
  • Free State: 64 per cent
  • Gauteng: 43 per cent
  • KwaZulu-Natal: 79 per cent
  • Limpopo: 79 per cent
  • Mpumalanga: 99 per cent
  • North West: 83 per cent
  • Northern Cape: 100 per cent
  • Western Cape: 94 per cent

Of the votes captured and audited so far, 1.37 per cent has been recorded as spoilt.

As announced earlier yesterday, the Commission made a decision to allow the counting of ballots received by 9pm, May 9, from international voting stations.

“So far we have captured 17 905 votes from 106 missions and we await the final votes from the 10 remaining missions,” says Moepya.

The trend of almost one in 10 voters voting outside of their voting district which emerged earlier yesterday has remained constant.
