Shianne claims silver at Junior World Championship

Boksburg’s barefoot water skiing revelation Shianne Addinall, finished behind New Zealand national Brooke Fitch, to claim silver for the junior overall result at the Junior World Barefoot Championships in Mulwala, Australia.

Shianne claimed a further three silver medals from finishing second in the tricks, slalom and jump events to finish the championships, which ran from March 10 to 16, with four silver medals and a trophy for her overall result.

“It (the championships) was a good experience,” she says.

“I came pretty close to realising my dream of becoming world champion after finishing second overall, and the scores between first and second were close, so I’m happy with the result,” says the 15-year-old.

She was also named Ekurhuleni’s Junior Sportswoman of the Year at a splendour sports awards ceremony at Birchwood Hotel on March 14.

The crowning follows a string of stellar performances in 2013 where she was named the European and African junior champion at the European and African Water Ski Championships in Kimberly.

“Being named Junior Sportswoman of the Year was quite a surprise, because I didn’t even know about the nomination,” says Shianne, who won the award for the first time.

Next for her are the South African Championships, which are set to take place in early May.

Overall scores:

1. Brooke Fitch (New Zealand) 3 000 (slalom 1 000, tricks 1 000, jump 1 000)

2. Shianne Addinall (South Africa) 2 639.28 (slalom 900, tricks 985.44, jump 753.85)
