Train kills school children near Dunswart station

Two school children died after being hit by a train as they walked between the set of tracks in Dunswart.

The 16- and 17-year-old boys, presumed to be from Plantation, were killed by a Metrorail commuter-rail train at about 8am on Tuesday, March 4.

The police say that the killed children were on their way to Etwatwa Secondary School before they were killed.

According to a police report, the two along with other hundreds of commuters were travelling in a train heading to Springs before it stopped for a red traffic light, a few metres away from Dunswart railway line station.

“The pair along with dozens of commuters jumped off the stationary train, and started walking between the set of tracks towards the station, because they were apparently late for work and school,” says Lieut-Col Else Mashinini from the Boksburg SAPS.

“At the same time, another train heading to Springs, having originated in Johannesburg, sped towards the crowd walking between the set of tracks and struck the boys.”

The others escaped harm while no one onboard was hurt in the incident.

The children died on the scene.

The identity of the youth have not yet to be released.

A number of train-related incidents have taken place across the area in the past years.
