Metro to educate youth on voting

The Youth Unit of the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality invites youths to attend a series of democracy and civic education workshops that will take place between November 5 and 8.

The workshops are an effort by the Ekurhuleni metro to promote knowledge on social cohesion among young people and as well as encourage youth members to register for the 2014 national elections.

According to Matome Chiloane of the Youth Unit, the purpose is to empower the young people of Ekurhuleni with enough information so that they realise the importance of registering and voting in next year’s elections.

“A lot of our young people do not realise the importance of participating in our democratic processes, yet they become the first to complain about government services,” says Chiloane.

“Over and above this, a lot of people lost their lives fighting for this democracy, and therefore we can only honour them by fully enjoying its benefits – this includes voting in a free and fair election.”

Chiloane explains that the workshops have been planned to coincide with the IEC’s voter registration weekend so that young eligible voters who have not yet registered may see the importance to do so.

Youth around Ekurhuleni are invited to attend the workshops closest to where they reside.

The first workshop will be at the Sam Hlalele Hall in Tembisa on Tuesday, November 5, followed by another on Thursday, November 7, at the Tsholo Hall in Katlehong and the final one will be at the Tsakane Hall on Friday, November 8.

Busses have been organised to transport the attendees to the venues free of charge and the workshops will all begin at 9am.

Those interested in attending the event and getting more information on the issue of transportation contact 011 999 1569.
