Girl Guides go to London

Six Girl Guides from Boksburg and Germiston will head to London to meet and interact with Guides from other countries.

To raise funds for their travels, they will host a jumble and white elephant sale.

According to Clair Murphy from Boksburg Girl Guide, the girls will be visiting Pax Lodge (Girl Guide World House located in London) and Foxlease (a training centre in the south of England) where they will meet and interact with other members of the organisation from around the world.

“The girls that will be going on this trip have all belonged to the Guiding movement for many years and most of them have achieved the Chiefs Challenge.

“This is the highest award that can be achieved as a guide. They are now Rangers and are taking on their challenge as Rangers to render service by being aware of their responsibilities as young adults,” says Murphy.

Girl Guides was started in South Africa in 1910, and is open to all girls and young women whatever their religion, ethnic group or background.

Girl Guides South Africa empowers girls and women to reach their fullest potential through a dynamic programme to become responsible citizens.

The six girls who are set to jet off to London are Angela Murphy, Bongiwe Zondo, Darian Bainton, Megan Bainton, Moyahabo Masipa and Tammi Botes.

The girls have been raising funds for their trip through various efforts, and have managed to raise R2 000.

“The girls have so far sold pancakes and popcorn, and have a number of fundraising activities planned over the next few months, including a holiday care programme for primary school children to be held during December holidays, a golf day, ‘Murder Dinner’ and the jumble sale,” says Murphy.

The Boksburg Girl Guides is looking for sponsors and supporters to assist in financing the trip.

“Besides the money, the girls will need items such as travel bags and shirts. We are also seeking prizes and other sponsorships for the golf day and ‘Murder Dinner’, so any assistance will be highly appreciated,” she adds.
