Substation explosion lands workers in hospital, leaves large parts of Boksburg without power

The estimated restoration time is Thursday afternoon, June 22.

An explosion at a substation in Anderbolt has led to municipal technicians suffering minor injuries this afternoon.

They were taken to hospital where they are receiving treatment.
The City of Ekurhuleni confirmed that the explosion, which occurred at around 12:30, has also led to an outage affecting crucial supply points to large parts of Boksburg North.

It is also understood that the underground cable on All Black Road also suffered damage.

The Boksburg Advertiser understands technicians are on site to restore power to areas that do not feed from the affected substation.
The estimated restoration time is Thursday afternoon, June 22.

The injured workers were reportedly sent to work at the substation apparently after an electrical fault in the power system was detected. It was when they were about to enter the substation that the facility was rocked by an explosion.

It is believed that prior to the explosion, city technicians were investigating vandalism at a substation in Sunward Park. It seems the two incidents are related, as it is believed that the vandalism may have caused the explosion at the Anderbolt substation.
Investigations continue.
