Cable thieves plunge Boksburg into prolonged power outages

Load reduction will be implemented in your neighbourhoods.

Amid the low temperatures forecast for the next few days, residents in large parts of Boksburg will suffer protracted power outages, following an attempted power cable theft, which caused extensive damage to the infrastructure in the Boksburg North area this morning (May 15).

Affected areas include Witfield, Comet, Cason, Boksburg North, Ravenswood, Beyers Park, Delmore Park, Dayan Glen, Lilianton, Ravensklip, Hughes, Jet Park and surroundings.

According to the metro spokesperson Zweli Dlamini, due to the extent of the damage caused to the 132kV cables, repairing the network might take a bit longer than usual.

This situation has left the metro with no choice but to introduce “load reduction” in the affected neighbourhoods to protect its electricity systems from overloading and causing further damage to infrastructure.
Load reduction will be implemented throughout the process of repairs.

Here’s how it’s going to work today (May 15):
08:00 to 17:00 – Witfield and other areas will be switched off.
17:00 to 08:00 – Jet Park and Yaldwyn areas will be switched off until the next morning (Tuesday).

Residents are advised to switch off their electrical appliances to avoid a surge when electricity returns.
The Boksburg Advertiser will update information as it becomes available.
