SPCA confiscates 10 neglected pigs

Ten pigs were confiscated from an informal piggery in Mapleton.

The Boksburg SPCA confiscated 10 neglected pigs from an informal piggery on Luvuyo Road, Mapleton, on April 19.

According to the SPCA, the owner left the animals without food and water.

“Our team arrived to find a decomposing carcass of one animal while others were roaming the property.

“I was disappointed and concerned that even after educating the owner on the importance of providing and maintaining minimum standards for his animals, he still could not even remove the carcass,” said SPCA inspector Ralph Chivaviro.

The informal piggery where the pigs were rescued.

He said the team went to the property several times and issued warnings to the owner, but he never bothered to heed the instructions.

They then had no choice but to confiscate the desperate animals.

The organisation is trying to establish who owns the animals.

Preliminary investigations suggest the owner left the animals in the care of someone else while he was away.

The pigs were taken to the Boksburg SPCA.

“We are considering not giving the owner the pigs back because he is unfit to care for them,” Chivaviro added.

Other pig owners in the area reportedly expressed concerns about the state of the animals, saying they put the health of other animals at risk.
