Tambo Memorial doctor bestowed with lifetime humanitarian award

She has been the head of ophthalmology at the Boksburg based hospital for almost three decades.

Tambo Memorial Hospital’s Dr Agnes Risko Kenyeres of Boksburg has been honoured with a lifetime achievement award for her outstanding selfless services in the healthcare industry.

She has been involved in promoting and growing projects to restore vision to the underprivileged in Ekurhuleni.

Kenyeres received this award from the Ophthalmological Society of South Africa (OSSA) during its 51st annual national congress, held at the Durban International Convention Centre from March 8 to 11.

Staff members and management at Tambo Memorial Hospital congratulated Dr Agnes Risko Kenyeres on receiving the award and making the hospital team proud.

The hospital spokesperson, Zoliswa Nzeku, explained the award acknowledges and celebrates an individual who has, over several years, demonstrated a pattern of humanitarian services which is above and beyond the normal call for duty of an ophthalmologist.

Kenyeres, who has been the head of ophthalmology at the hospital for almost three decades, is also an executive member of the Southern African Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery (SASCRS), while also a member of the European and American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery.
In the past, she embarked on blind tours with consultants from the St John’s Eye Clinic in Chris Baragwanath Academic Hospital, which made her realise the increasing need for cataract operations in the Ekurhuleni District.

She began to do operations two to three Saturdays per month to decrease cataract blindness and restore vision to the underprivileged in the district. With this initiative, she was able to multiply her cataract operations annually.

“I am overwhelmed, but I know this award belongs to the Tambo hospital, because without teamwork, I could have never achieved anything alone.
“I’m grateful for all the nurses in the out-patient department, theatre, hospital management, pharmacy and also Rotary, who helped in the fight to restore sight to the poorest. I feel very fortunate to be able to help,” said Kenyeres.
