AIDA Boksburg, in partnership with Tuckers Attorneys, Hammond Pole Attorneys and Nedbank, held a charity golf day that enjoyed a good turnout on March 28.
The event, held at ERPM Golf Course, was organised to raise funds for those affected by the gas tanker explosion, which claimed at least 41 lives on Christmas Eve in Plantation.
Among the over 200 people who attended, 120 were golfers who came to play on the day.
To help raise additional funds, the golfers who won during the event donated their prizes back to the project, which was then auctioned.
The organisers have not yet confirmed the total amount raised as they are still receiving money from the golf day.
During the event, supporters also donated items, including clothing for the blast victims.
The team will, after the committee has met, distribute the money raised and the donations to the identified, starting next week.
Meanwhile, former South African welterweight champion Harold Volbrecht donated his gloves to be auctioned and former junior lightweight world champion, Brian Mitchell donated a Mitchell memorabilia to also be auctioned to raise funds.
Managing director of AIDA, Denver Ramnath, said every cent collected would cover the needs of the beneficiaries.
“While we cannot change the world, if we make a difference to a few people in our lifetime, it matters a lot,” said Ramnath.
He pointed out that apart from raising funds, the event also served as an opportunity to unite people.
“Sport has the power to unite. Thank you to ERPM for offering us their facility to host our fundraiser,” said Ramnath.
Ward 32 Clr Marius de Vos welcomed the attendees and Tumelo Matlou from Nedbank gave the honorary start, while Anthony Louw from Tuckers attorneys served as the programme director for the night. Andrew Gerhard and Katlego Mthembu represented Hammond Pole Attorneys.
