Angling legend dies

The legendary angler's memorial service will be held at the AGS Kairos Witfield-Oos church on February 10.

Talented local angler Johann Keet died on February 5 after being diagnosed with a brain tumour in November.

Keet owned an angling shop on the corner of Commissioner and Joubert streets for 42 years and was instrumental in teaching people young and old the art of fishing.

His wife, Marisa, said Keet was the president of the Daggafontein Angling Club and captain of the South African Freshwater Ladies Team before he died.

“He won a lot of trophies as an angler and was passionate about the sport. My husband wouldn’t trade angling for anything and he was good in it.

“He donned the South African angling colours as youngster multiple times,” she said.
Keet also enjoyed golf and won several trophies in social tournaments in the sport.

“Apart from being a good angler and golfer, Johann was a good person – humble, patient and soft towards every person.

“He had time for everyone and he was a great husband, grandfather and brother to his siblings,” said his wife.
She explained that Keet underwent an operation in the same month the tumour was diagnosed.

“The tumour removal was successful and the doctors did a great job, but his life changed after undergoing the operation; he lost the use of his right hand and feet after.

“Johann went back for check-ups and doctors found that he had a cavity on his brain. He was supposed to go for chemotherapy and radiation after they found the cavity but his body was too weak for that and the doctors recommended he regain his strength first.

“Typical of my husband being such a good man, he was worried about me and the children even when he was weak and sick.

“I looked after him here at home hoping that he will regain his strength. Unfortunately, he did not. I already miss him and my heart is broken that I lost someone that I loved dearly,” Marisa concluded.

The legendary angler’s memorial service will be held at the AGS Kairos Witfield-Oos church at 13:00 on February 10.
