Metro to clear waste collection backlog in your area over the weekend

The catch-up schedule is set to be implemented on November 12 and 13.

The City of Ekurhuleni will be doing waste collection rounds this weekend to address all existing backlogs

Targeted areas are: Boksburg, Benoni, Germiston, Brakpan, Kempton Park, Edenvale, Springs and Nigel.
Residents of these areas are encouraged to take out their wheelie bins and plastic bags so that they are not missed by the teams as they collect the waste. If your waste is not collected on Saturday, take it out again on Sunday.

According to metro spokesperson, Zweli Dlamini, the city undertakes to address the backlogs at the weekend to enable normal round collections to get underway as early as Monday next week.

“The latest development comes following the decision by the city to establish Waste Management Task Team to address waste collection challenges in the region. This move followed numerous complaints of no collection of wastein certain areas, especially Springs, Kempton Park, Boksburg, Benoni and Edenvale.”

Dlamini explained that the main bottleneck was the non-availability of enough fleet due to break downs. The city has, however, managed to get some of the vehicles back and they are distributed accordingly to ensure that the service is normalised as soon as possible.

Yesterday, the city announced that services had also resumed in outsourced areas after a dispute over payments was resolved with service providers. These areas are Tsakane/Langaville, Wattville, Daveyton-Etwatwa, Duduza, Kwa-Thema, Tembisa One and Two, Norkem Park, Thokoza and Palmridge.

“The city once again apologises profusely to our communities for the inconvenience caused recently, and can assure residents that we remain committed to a cleaner and healthier Ekurhuleni. The city further thanks residents for their patience during these difficult days,” said Zweli.

The city also pleads with residents who continue to experience waste removal challenges to report such via the call centre on 086 054 3000.
