Netball players show skills at mini world cup

Boksburg schools excelled in the Ekurhuleni mini world cup.

Hoërskool Dr EG Jansen was abuzz with netball action on October 29 when schools took part in the Ekurhuleni mini netball world cup tournament organised by Ekurhuleni Netball.

The mini world cup was held in the spirit of the Netball World Cup that will take place in Cape Town in 2023.

Each school sent a representative to participate in the draw for which country they would represent on October 17.

Schools that participated included Alberview Primary (Tonga), Laerskool Concordia (Jamaica Yellow), Curro Serengeti (Singapore), Dalpark Primary (Zimbabwe), Laerskool Die Arend (Malawi ), Laerskool Impala (Wales), Izibuko Primary (Sri Lanka), Laerskool Jan van Riebeeck (Scotland ), Mampudi Primary (England Red), Opelweg Primary (New Zeeland ), OR Tambo Primary (Australia), Laerskool Randhart (England White), Leondale Primary (Fiji), Laerskool Van Dyk (South Africa Green ), Woodlands International Primary College (Uganda), Umzamo Primary (South Africa Yellow), Birchleigh High (England ), Curro Serengeti (Fiji ), Dawnview High (South Africa), Hoërskool Dr EG Jansen (Scotland), Erasmus Monareng (Sri Lanka), Hoërskool Hans Moore (Zimbabwe), Hoërskool Kempton Park (Australia), Hoërskool Oosterlig (Uganda), Tiistetsong (Jamaica) and Vosloorus Comprehensive (Malawi).

The results were as follows:
U11: first Laerskool Randhart, second Laerskool Concordia, third Laerskool Jan van Riebeeck and fourth Alberview Primary.

The spirit trophy winner was Laerskool Concordia.
Bonolo Lebona (GA) from Woodlands Primary was named the best shooter, while Evané Botha from Laerskool Concordia was the best attack player. Chané Olivier and Leané Stander from Laerskool Die Arend shared the award for the best defensive player. The most promising ubuntu player was Lyra Dladla from OR Tambo.

U14: first Hoërskool Dr EG Jansen, second Hoërskool Kempton Park, third Hoërskool Oosterlig and fourth Birchleigh High School.

The spirit trophy winner was Hoërskool Dr EG Jansen.

Mieke Pienaar from Hoërskool Kempton Park was the best shooter, while Zunika van der Merwe from Hoërskool Hans Moore was the best attack player. Lindokuhle Dlamini from Tiisetsong Secondary School was the best defensive player. The most promising player and most promising ubuntu player was Kgomotso Motsopi from Erasmus Monareng.

The best ubuntu school of the day (U11) went to Mampudi Primary and the best ubuntu school of the day (U14) went to Erasmus Monareng.

The tournament was supported by the Department of Sports, Arts and Culture and Netball South Africa.

The top four schools will also go head-to-head again next year in a tournament organised by Gauteng Schools Netball. The venue is still to be determined.
