OR Tambo Month activites to look forward to

The metro remembers the icon of the liberation struggle through various activities this month.

October is regarded as OR Tambo Month in the annual calendar of activities of the City of Ekurhuleni.

This is the time of the year when the local authority remembers the icon of the liberation struggle through various activities as a way of reminding South Africans of the selfless leadership Tambo provided in the struggle against oppression in the country.

Oliver Reginald Tambo was born on October 27, 1917, in Bizana in the Eastern Cape.

He was an anti-apartheid politician and revolutionary who died in 1993 at the age of 75 after suffering a stroke.

At the time of his death, he was a resident of the City of Ekurhuleni and is buried alongside his wife, Dr Adelaide Tambo, another revolutionary, at the Tamboville Cemetery in Wattville, Benoni.

The Tambos and the late Chris Hani have conferred the Freedom of the City of Ekurhuleni in 2003.

This year’s OR Tambo events are:

• October 22: A panel discussion, debates and public speaking competition for learners at the Boksburg Council Chamber.

• October 27 and 28: OR Tambo choral music workshop and seminar and the main event on October 29 at the OR Tambo Cultural Precinct, in Wattville.
Choirs wishing to participate in this event should enter by October 14.

• October 27: Wreath laying ceremony at the Tamboville cemetery in Wattville.

• October 29 and 30: OR Tambo Soncini Social Cohesion Games at Germiston Stadium.

The city encourages members of the public to join the activities as they are mainly aimed at celebrating the city’s rich heritage.
