Flying Squad foils armed robbery

The suspects were arrested before the armed robbery could be executed.

Members of the Benoni Flying Squad (BFS) arrested five suspects after foiling a planned armed robbery at a mall in Kempton Park on October 1.

According to Warrant Officer Grant Giblin, BFS spokesperson, the Johannesburg district crime intelligence unit received information that a silver Nissan Almera would be used in a planned armed robbery near the CBD.

“BFS members were briefed and an operation was immediately put into place,” said Giblin.

“Officers were positioned in strategic locations around the area. At 13:30 the suspected vehicle was spotted on Monument Road near the intended target.”

Two of the firearms that were recovered in the vehicle.

BFS units tactically surrounded the vehicle and brought it to a stop at the corner of Palm Avenue.

“The five occupants were ordered out of the vehicle and after a thorough search the officers discovered three unlicensed 9mm pistols and 32 rounds of live ammunition,” he said.

“We would like to commend the officers for their swift and precise execution of their duties which led to the successful arrest of the suspects while ensuring the safety of the public.”

The suspects will be appearing in the Kempton Park Magistrate’s court on charges of possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition as well as conspiracy to commit a crime.
