Illegal mining suspect possibly involved in murder of policeman

The illegal miners are sleeping and eating at the mine dump.

Five illegal miners, who were arrested on September 23, appeared at the Boksburg Magistrate’s Court on September 26.

The matter was postponed to October 4.

It is also believed that one of the suspects is linked to the murder of a Reiger Park Police officer. This is according to Boksburg North Police spokesperson Constable Justice Ramaube.

He explained the Zama Zamas were arrested when a joint operation between various law enforcement agencies converged on the mine dump next to Main Reef Road after a tip-off about illegal activities.

“When the teams arrived at the dump early that morning, the illegal miners fired shots at them. The officers retaliated with gunfire and the five were subsequently arrested while others fled the scene,” said Ramaube.

“Two of the five were injured during the crossfire and were treated by Gauteng provincial paramedics. A shotgun with ammunition, a hunting rifle and R5 ammunition were confiscated at the scene.

“The suspects are facing charges of attempted murder and possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition.”
