EMPD tip of the week

Always keep a safe following distance

The EMPD urges motorists to be vigilant at the traffic lights, busy intersections, stop signs and places where there is a sign saying smash-and-grab hot spot.

EMPD media liaison officer Lerato Monyane advised that when approaching such public roads, the motorist must always ensure that the doors are locked and all windows are closed.

“Valuable items such as cellphones, handbags, laptops and others must not be kept in positions where they are easily seen, as this attracts would-be-criminals. Keep them in the boot of the vehicle instead.
“Always keep a safe following distance so that it is easy to swerve away in case there is a necessity and it is safe to do so.

“If you suspect anything at these hot spots, by hooting you are going to alert other motorists and that might scare the smash-and-grabber. If you fall the victim to common robbery, please report the crime as soon as possible,” cautioned Monyane.
