Waste crisis: Metro slated on social media

Backlog mounts as metro faces refuse removal truck problems

The City of Ekurhuleni’s Waste Department has been raked over the coals by social media users for its sluggish garbage collection at residences and businesses.

The social media backlash started when the Boksburg Advertiser posted an article titled ‘How to get a new wheelie bin’, reminding residents of the process to follow when applying for a replacement/new wheelie bin.

Instead, readers seized the chance to weigh in on the metro’s crippled refuse collection service.

Here are some of the comments from our Facebook page:
Darren Edwin Zabielski: Can the residents remind the City of Ekurhuleni of the process of actually fetching our wheelie bins/rubbish and then we can worry about the replacement of our wheelie bins?
Darren Edwin Zabielski: It’s ridiculous!
Candice Orford: Oh, this is funny. Who came up with this crap after six weeks of no bin collections?
Madelaine Fabian: What good is that? They can’t empty the ones we have.
Denise Beukes: Great stuff. Now can you please explain to your waste management personnel how to empty our wheelie bins, and how frequently to empty them? For instance, once per week, not once per month as is the case at the moment. Thank you.
Denise Terblanche: What’s the process to get trucks to empty the wheelie bins?
Dorothy Goodall: We take our refuse to dump ourselves every week. I replaced the wheelie twice now. Tired of arguing with the council about being charged for service we don’t get. They are useless.
Hazel Spangenberg: And when the contractors break or damage your bin you have to go through the whole rigmarole to get a replacement! Ours was dropped off the back of the truck lift and the wheels broke off, then they refuse to empty it! Such a farce!
Gelanda Dunbar: They broke our lid when trying to empty it after three weeks of non-collection.
Renier Denise Landman: So it’s a MUST to take something to them, but for them to come and collect the bins it’s a MUST NOT, and most people got their bins stolen because of this BS and even police don’t do anything about it. I see people every day with bins that they use for scrap and so on.
Ivy Leibach: What’s the point? They don’t collect them.
