A model determined to win Miss Deaf South Africa

She is determined to win Miss Deaf South Africa.

Sylvia Mojanko (42), a finalist in Miss Deaf South Africa, said she wants to win the pageant to promote the use of sign language in South Africa.

The finale of the pageant takes place in Durban on September 3, along with the other categories of Mrs and Mr South Africa.

Sylvia, who resides in Klipppoortjie, said she decided to take part in Miss Deaf South Africa to show her daughter that anything can be achieved in life.

“After winning the pageant I want to roll out educational campaigns that will promote the use of sign language. I want it to be compulsorily in all schools.

“Deaf people have many challenges. It is difficult for us to find work or do things that we love because most people we come across can’t communicate with us. We have to travel with an interpreter. This can only change if sign language is taught in schools.

“My other plan is to help people who are underprivileged through the outreach programmes that I’m going to initiate once I become crowned. I want to also create job opportunities for young people in South Africa.
“It has always been my dream to take part in this competition. I know I’m beautiful and I have got what it takes to win it.

“I was born deaf, but that doesn’t mean I cannot do anything that I love doing. I have been competing in beauty pageants since my school years. I’m proud of whom I am and I want South Africans and the world to witness my modelling talent.

“I have always loved modelling and my wish is to meet the current Miss World, whom I aspire to be like once I’m crowned. She has achieved a lot as a model and philanthropist,” said Sylvia.

She added that she is taking part in the pageant to motivate and inspire other people with disabilities.
“I’m a role model to other people already and if I win I will change so many lives. To realise my dream, I need the public’s vote!”

To vote for Sylvia SMS MDS21 to 47439 (SMSes cost R3).
