Boksburg North SAPS firearm license renewal process

Read on see how to renew your firearm license.

Boksburg North SAPS reminds the public of the station’s firearm licence renewal (expired licence) process.

Boksburg North SAPS spokesperson Constable Justice Ramaube explains the process:

1. The applicant’s competency must be valid at the time of applying.
(If competency expired it must be renewed and approved before the firearm license application can be handed in).

2. The firearm applicant must bring the firearm with the application to the designated firearm office (DFO) for inspection.

a) The firearm serial number will be tested by the DFO. If there is a preference on the make or the calibre the DFO will give the applicant a SAPS521 (g), a notice of incorrect information to rectify the preference before an application can be handed in.

b) The firearm must be in the applicant’s name, with no third-party applications except for estate firearms that will follow normal estate application guidelines.

c)The firearm will be taken in by the SAPS, only inspected.

The firearm will be handed back to the applicant with Annexure B after inspection.

d) Annexure B will serve as a storage permit. The permit is for storage purposes only and not permission to carry or a firearm license. As per regulation 86 subsection (4) (Firearm must stay in the safe).

e) If the application is refused the applicant will be given 60 days to appeal and or legally dispose of the firearm as per the Firearms Control Act 60 of 2000 and the Firearms Control Regulations of 2004. If this was not done within 60 days from the date of expiry the firearm will be forfeited to the state.
