School transporter killed in suspected taxi violence

Investigations are continuing.

Learners from various local schools including Verkenner Primary and St Francis Preparatory School have been left traumatised when the driver of their transport vehicle was shot and killed, before 15:00 on June 15.

According to eye witnesses the vehicle was stationary at the intersection of Beryl Street and Main Reef Road, Dunswart when an unidentified silver vehicle stopped next to the driver-side and opened fire.

“I heard the shots and we all hid under the seats,” said an 11-year-old passenger.

“I thought we were going to die.”

Employees at the Stewards Industrial Park acted swiftly to take the estimated 13 learners, aged between four and 13 into the safety of the facility, while gathering contact information for their parents.

“I received a call from an unknown number, the lady told me that there had been an accident involving my child’s transport vehicle and that I should come collect my daughter,” said one of the parents on the scene, who wished to remain anonymous.

“I live in Leachville, Brakpan and came as fast as I can, I cannot believe that my child’s life was in such danger. I am devastated.”

She continued to describe the driver as reliable stating that her child had been traveling with him for the past 10 years.

Members of the Benoni SAPS and EMPD were on the scene but no further details are currently available.

It is suspected that the incident may be related to taxi violence.
