BFS tracks robber to business in Boksburg

The second firearm was reported as stolen.

A joint operation involving members of the Benoni Flying Squad (BFS), Edenvale CPF and a private security company, has led to the arrest of a suspected armed robber in Hughes, Boksburg.

According to Warrant Officer Grant Giblin, spokesperson for the unit, the operation was formulated following a robbery on June 2. A man was followed from a bank in Edenvale to Sandton and an undisclosed amount of money was stolen.

“The team were able to trace a silver Mercedes Benz, which was used during the crime, to a business on North Rand Road,” said Giblin.

“Employees at the company were able to identify the driver of the vehicle and the 39-year-old was questioned on the scene.”

He said the suspect was escorted to his home in a townhouse complex in Madeley Street where a large amount of money was found.

“The discovery of another set of car keys led officers to a white Volkswagen Golf GTI where a Smith and Wesson .40 pistol, with the serial number filed off, and six live rounds of ammunition, as well as a 9mm Norinco pistol, were found,” he said.

“The Norinco was traced through its serial number and was found it has been reported as stolen in Acacia in February.”

The suspect will be appearing in the Boksburg Magistrate’s Court on charges of possession of an unlicensed firearm, possession of a stolen firearm and possession of suspected stolen money.
