The East Rand branch of the South African Air Force Association (SAAFA) is calling on all former air force and aviation members, as well as persons with an aptitude for aviation, to join its organisation.
SAAFA was founded in 1945 by a veteran pilot from WW1, Col Rod Douglas, who experienced the aftermath of the war and witnessed the plight of the widows, children and injured airmen.
Today, the association offers former servicemen and women, as well as aviation specialists across the board, a light-hearted atmosphere where like-minded individuals can share their experiences and expertise.
“We also do extensive fund-raising to offer financial support to veterans through our Care for the Aged programme,” said Roelf Rossouw, chairperson of the association.
“As a former air force member, aviation and the comradery that is fostered within the unit becomes part of your lifeblood; it is like the first love you never forget.
“Our association offers members the opportunity to ‘belong’ once again.”
With its 49 members, Roelf and his team continuously strive to serve their community and grow interest in the aviation sector among youngsters.
The East Rand branch will be hosting its AGM on March 12 at 11:00 at the MOTH Memorial Cottages in Benoni.
