Matriculants beat the odds

School management is proud of the class of 2021 for its great resilience.

Despite the disruptions and stress brought by the pandemic while going through their two critical years of high school, local matriculants have demonstrated great resilience with others delivering outstanding results.

Basic education minister Angie Motshekga announced that the matric pass rate for the class of 2021 is 76.4%, a slight improvement from 2020’s 76.2%.

Balmoral College maintains a 100% pass rate
Balmoral College has once again achieved a 100% pass rate and delivered a bachelor pass rate of 95% and a diploma pass rate of 5%, which is not surprising given the school’s track record of maintaining a consistent 100% pass rate for more than a decade.

The school delivered 56 As, 87 Bs and 92 Cs. Its top three achievers are Nokuthula Msimanga who got six distinctions and a B, Mbali Mbatha who got five distinctions and a B and Khulile Mxhosana who received four distinctions and three Bs.

The Elsburg resident, Nokuthula Msimanga, was studying seven subjects and obtained distinctions for six subjects and 78% for the seventh subject. She said she wants to fulfil her childhood dream of studying medicine.
Nokuthula said it was no surprise that she would emerge as one of the top achievers at the school, but she was not expecting more than five distinctions.

“I kind of expected five distinctions, but it has come as a beautiful surprise that I managed to get six distinctions.”

The top achiever, who praised her teachers for their dedication and hard work, encouraged other learners to work hard and advised that it’s always important to study in advance instead of leaving things up to the 11th hour.

The school principal, Memory Wium, said she was proud of the class of 2021 for its great resilience, despite going through two of their most critical years of high school during a pandemic. She attributed the school’s continued success in the NSC exams to passionate and hardworking learners and teachers.
“I am absolutely proud of our learners and staff.”

Oos Rand Secondary School
Oos Rand Secondary School’s matric class of 2021 managed to maintain its upward trend in the school’s overall pass rate over the past three years.

The school’s matric class of 2021 delivered a 78.7% pass rate, a slight increase from the 75% achieved the previous year, and the 74% obtained in 2019.
Forty learners achieved a bachelor’s pass, 81 diploma passes and 27 certificate passes.

The school’s top achiever is head girl Happy Dzanga, who got two As, four Bs and one C.
Principal Peter Arendse, who recently took over from the previous head, attributes the school’s continued success in the NSC exams to passionate teachers and learners.

Oos Rand Secondary School pass rate increased from 75% to a 78.7% pass rate. Principal Peter Arendse said that the improvement came as a result of hard work and commitment.

“Our dedicated and highly experienced teachers know the level of commitment that is required of them and they go all out to help our learners improve their academic performance.
“Of course, what we have achieved is below our target, but we have managed to maintain our upward trend in our overall performance, and aim to do even better this year.”

The school management said although the school’s teachers are extremely dedicated to the learners and their academic performance, they also expect maturity from their learners by attending classes, arriving in class on time and being involved in the variety of academic programmes the school offers.

“Our school takes in learners from all over Ekurhuleni, and our teachers work extremely hard to ensure that each learner realises their potential from Grade Eight to matric.

“We have introduced several programmes, which see teachers work alongside learners to help them reach their full potential, leading to excellent academic development,” explained Arendse.
