Off-duty flying squad officer commended

Benoni Flying Squad officers come across dangerous situations when off duty on a regular basis.

From January 21 to 23, Benoni Flying Squad (BFS) officers arrested six suspects and recovered four vehicles and a firearm.

According to BFS communications officer WO Grant Giblin, on Friday at around 18:00, Const Juan-Mare Eksteen was off duty when she received a call about a shooting in progress in Third Avenue, Boksburg North.

“Being in the vicinity, Eksteen immediately booked herself on duty and rushed to the scene in her own vehicle.
“Arriving at the scene, she found the alleged suspect on a residential premises where the community had contained him.

“A Colt 45 pistol with the serial number filed off and 21 live rounds of ammunition were found after the suspect had attempted to hide these. The suspect was immediately arrested and the firearm confiscated.

“BFS officers come across dangerous situations when off duty on a regular basis and never shy away from intervening when necessary. Eksteen is commended for going beyond the call of duty for responding to a potentially dangerous scene while she was off duty,” Giblin said.

In further policing, officers arrested four suspects for possession of drugs in Wenden Avenue, Brakpan, Freedom Drive, Rabie Ridge and Turton Street, Daveyton. Nyaope, cocaine and dagga were confiscated in these separate incidents.
Officers on patrol in Illiliba Section, Thembisa, were stopped by a victim of domestic violence, which resulted in the arrest of a suspect for assault.
The four robbed and abandoned vehicles recovered were a silver Honda Ballade at Oakmore Taxi Rank, Thembisa, reported on an Olifantsfontein case, a grey Volkswagen Polo in Japonika Street, Ebony Park, reported on a Midrand case, a white Chevrolet Utility in Ivory Park Extension Two, reported on an Ivory Park case, and a white Toyota Hilux on the R25 near the old Mopani shooting range, reported on a Rabie Ridge case.

The suspects will be appearing in local magistrate’s courts to face charges of possession of and dealing in drugs, possession of unlicensed firearm and ammunition, domestic violence and assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm.
