Reiger Park brothers found dead in mining area

The brothers appear to have been trapped when the ground starting sinking.

Two children, brothers aged seven and 10, died in what appears to be the result of a land subsidence incident at a mining area in Reiger Park.

According to the Reiger Park police, the two brothers were found dead this afternoon, around 14:30, following an extensive search involving the police, family and many members of the community.

Preliminary investigation revealed that the brothers, along with other children, went for a swim in the dam located in the mine area yesterday, January 20.

Reiger Park SAPS spokesperson, Const Zanele Motaung said the family became concerned after the children failed to return home on Thursday, and they went to the police station to report the matter.

A search for the pair was immediately launched.

“We looked for them until late, but the search proved unsuccessful on Thursday.

“The search resumed today (January 21) and information gathered led us to the mine dam where they were found. They were, unfortunately, certified dead,” explained Motaung.”

“It looks like they were trapped after being sucked into the subsidence area when the land started to sink, and they remained in there all the time.

This is a developing story and will be updated as more information emerges.
