Local visual artist group growing

The group will hold workshops to equip those who may be struggling with the application of paint and other help by well-trained artists.

The newly formed East Rand Visual Artists Combine recently held a meeting to discuss ways to bolster continued support and solidarity among its members.

The group was formed to unite artists and spread awareness about their artwork.

The event, held in Atlasville, was attended by artists from Boksburg and surrounding towns, and others came from as far as Pretoria. During the meeting, Freda van der Merwe was appointed exhibition organiser and Paul Kindon co-administrator.

The founder of the group, Dirkie de Wet, said he was excited that the group has finally come into existence and they hope to learn from each other as artists.

“We decided that places such as shopping centres, Zoo Lake and parks will be the perfect spot to showcase our crafts to generate income,” said de Wet.

The Parkrand resident added they are planning to hold workshops to equip those who may be struggling with the application of paint and other help by well-trained artists.

The group, which consists of about 40 members, will hold its meetings once a month.

The youngest member, a 19-year-old former Boksburg High School learner, Mikayla Dovale, said she loved painting because it was therapeutic.

“I joined the group so that I can learn and excel in what I do, with the hopes of making a career out of this,” said Dovale. She hopes more young art lovers join the group.
