N12 accident: Neil is now out of induced coma

Neil's friends and family are selling bracelets and raising funds to support his family during this difficult time.

Rynfield resident Neil Brits (32), who was involved in an accident on the N12 on October 7, woke up on October 17 for the first time since being in an induced coma.

Neil, a qualified technician, was on his way to work in Kempton Park when the accident occurred at around 07:20.
His wife, Angelique Brits, explained: “We’ve spoken to a few witnesses and it appears my husband in his vehicle was standing still in traffic on the N12 at the R21 off-ramp. A truck driver then lost control of his vehicle.
“He bumped a few other cars and ended up on top of my husband’s car. The entire back of the car was under the truck. There appeared to be no attempt from the driver to stop. It’s a miracle my husband is alive.”

The Advertiser previously reported Neil suffered from bleeding and swelling on the brain. His left ribs were broken and his lungs were slightly hurt. His face was also swollen.

According to Angelique, Neil is still in ICU; however, he is doing a little bit better.
“He’s very confused about his situation, but his eyes were open. He acknowledges and understands when I talk to him. He tries to speak, but then I have to remind him he can’t talk yet (due to the trachea) and he must just nod his head.

“They have added calming medication to his daily medication as he’s restless. Doctors said it will take a couple of days for him to calm down and realise what’s happening around him.

“We don’t know for how long he’s going to be in hospital, as every patient is different,” she explained.

Angelique expressed her gratitude to everybody who supported the family.
“I want to thank everybody for their love and prayers.
“Some of our friends even started to raise funds for us. I believe they’re doing it because we don’t know what lies ahead and what treatment he might need in the future. I’m so grateful because I didn’t even think of that.”
